Vortex Indicator
For each bar, the Vortex Indicator measures how far price moved away from the prior bar's low (counted as upward movement) and how far it moved away from the prior bar's high (counted as downward movement). Both are summed over a rolling window and divided by the same window's total true range, giving two lines - VI+ and VI- - that each express a share of the range actually travelled, rather than a share of net price change the way most momentum measures do. That distinction matters: a choppy bar with a wide range but little net movement still contributes meaningfully to both lines, which is exactly the behaviour that makes Vortex separate genuine directional effort from a market that is merely volatile. VI+ sitting above VI- means upward movement is currently claiming the larger share of the range travelled; a cross between the two lines marks the point where that balance changes hands, which is the indicator's standard trend-turn signal. Notes and limitations - Needs InpPeriod bars of history before the first value appears; earlier bars are intentionally left empty rather than guessed. - Each bar's window sums fixed offsets from price and is computed independently of every other bar - nothing here depends on a value this indicator wrote itself, so nothing here can repaint. - Vortex is a trend-direction measure, not a strength or momentum reading by itself - the gap between the two lines is not calibrated to any particular threshold, only their relative order and crossovers are meaningful. - In a genuinely range-bound market the two lines can cross repeatedly with no follow-through; pair with a range/trend filter rather than trading every cross in isolation.
