Tick Value And Contract Size Report
Every position sizer, every risk calculator and every "lots from percent" formula ultimately rests on three broker-published numbers: tick size, tick value and contract size. When a sizer misbehaves, the argument about whose formula is wrong usually ends the moment somebody prints those numbers. This script prints them for the whole Market Watch, one line per symbol, along with point, digits, and the derived figure everything hinges on: pip value per lot = tick value * pip size / tick size with pip size being ten points on 3 and 5 digit quotes and one point on the rest. To sanity-check any sizer, take its claimed risk, divide by stop distance in pips and lots, and the result must match this column. If it does not, the sizer is guessing - a common cause is dividing by point where tick size is not equal to point, which on many index CFDs silently inflates the result tenfold. The trap this table refuses to fall into is the zero. Tick value comes from the broker and reads zero when the symbol specification has not loaded or the feed is stale. Feed that into the formula and the sizer divides by garbage or, worse, concludes a pip is worth nothing and sizes accordingly. Rows with zero or invalid tick data are quarantined into a flagged list with the reason stated; they never appear among the trustworthy rows. Symbols that carry plausible numbers but no live quote right now are printed with a marker, because their tick value may date from a previous session. The table is sorted by pip value per lot, largest first, so the instruments that move an account fastest sit at the top. Notes and limitations - Tick value is quoted in account currency and moves with exchange rates. For any pair whose quote currency is not the account currency, the pip value drifts tick by tick - treat the column as current, not constant. - A flagged symbol is not necessarily broken at the broker; clicking it into a chart once usually makes the terminal load its specification, after which a re-run shows real numbers. - The report does not compute pip value for a specific open position, only the standard per-lot figure at the current rates. - The script reads only. It opens nothing and modifies nothing.
