Ehlers Super Smoother Standalone

A simple moving average removes noise by averaging it away, but it treats every frequency in that average the same way: real trend and the 2-4 bar chop that aliases against your chart's sampling rate both get smoothed by the same amount, per unit of lag. Ehlers' SuperSmoother is a Butterworth- derived recursive filter designed against that actual noise spectrum instead - it is built to pass the low frequencies (trend) with almost no attenuation while cutting the near-Nyquist noise sharply, which is why it tracks price more tightly than an SMA/EMA of the same nominal period. This file plots both the classic two-pole version, from Ehlers' original TASC coefficients, and the steeper three-pole version from his later "Predictive and Trend-Following Filters" work. Each additional pole steepens the rolloff - suppresses more of the noise just below the cutoff - at the cost of a little extra lag, and seeing both lines on the same chart at the same period makes that trade-off concrete instead of theoretical. Both lines are fully recursive: each bar's value depends only on price and the filter's own prior output, so there is no lookahead and nothing repaints once a bar has closed. Notes and limitations - This is a smoothing filter, not a signal generator - it estimates where price is once high-frequency noise is removed, it does not by itself say when to trade. Use the two/three-pole crossover, or your own price-versus-filter logic, for entries. - The first few bars after the indicator loads (fewer than the pole count) are seeded directly from price rather than the recursive formula, since there is no prior filter output yet to recurse from. - Like any lowpass filter, a shorter InpPeriod passes more noise through and a longer one adds more lag - there is no period that eliminates both, only a trade-off to choose deliberately. - Never repaints: each bar's value is final once that bar closes.
